چکیده

In this paper we study similarity measures for moving curves which can, for example, model changing coastlines or retreating glacier termini. Points on a moving curve have two parameters, namely the position along the curve as well as time. We therefore focus on similarity measures for surfaces, specifically the Fréchet distance between surfaces. While the Fréchet distance between surfaces is not even known to be computable, we show for variants arising in the context of moving curves that they are polynomial-time solvable or NP-complete depending on the restrictions imposed on how the moving curves are matched. We achieve the polynomial-time solutions by a novel approach for computing a surface in the so-called free-space diagram based on max-flow min-cut duality. 1998 ACM Subject Classification I.3.5 Computational Geometry and Object Modeling

A Novel Method for Tracking Moving Objects using Block-Based Similarity

Extracting and tracking active objects are two major issues in surveillance and monitoring applications such as nuclear reactors, mine security, and traffic controllers. In this paper, a block-based similarity algorithm is proposed in order to detect and track objects in the successive frames. We define similarity and cost functions based on the features of the blocks, leading to less computati...

An investigation of tensile strength of Ti6Al4V titanium screw inside femur bone using finite element and experimental tests

The geometric optimization of orthopedic screws can considerably increase their orthopedic efficiency. Due to the high geometric parameters of orthopedic screws, a finite element simulation is an effective tool for analyzing and forecasting the effect of the parameters on the load-bearing capacity of different types of screws and bones. Thus, in the present study, the tensile strength of a typi...

Exact algorithms for partial curve matching via the Fréchet distance

Curve matching is a fundamental problem that occurs in many applications. In this paper, we study the problem of measuring partial similarity between curves. Specifically, given two curves, we wish to maximize the total length of subcurves that are close to each other, where closeness is measured by the Fréchet distance, a common distance measure for curves. The resulting maximal length is call...

10491 Results of the break-out group: Similarity measures

Many of the fundamental problems in trajectory analysis have one issue in common, namely calculating the similarity between two (sub)trajectories. Simplified, the problem is as follows. Given two (polygonal) curves P and Q, one would like to match them up in an optimal way (i.e., find a continuous mapping from the points of P to the points of Q, so that the mapping maps the endpoints of one cur...
